The aim of the project is to test the model for social LCA (S-LCA) as suggested by a workgroup within the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative. By performing a case study on a laptop we try to answer the question if the model works, if the results are reasonable, relevant and applicable, and if the model can be improved. Another purpose is to achieve factual knowledge about a laptop’s social impact on stakeholders and the society throughout its entire life cycle.
The project group is supported by an external reference group. The aim is to conduct a literature study and to perform a case study in accordance with the model in the report Guidelines for Social Life Cycle Assessment of Products (Benoît and Mazijn 2009). The results of the S-LCA are to be documented by two scientific articles.
The project is performed from September 1, 2010 until December 31, 2011.
Preliminary results indicate that the model in principal is useful, but still needs some improvements. We have identified the following issues for further development:
The project was presented at a Social LCA workshop at Green delta TC in Berlin, Germany, on the 31th of May: http://www.greendeltatc.com/uploads/media/KTH_Ekener.pdf. A conference paper was presented at the Ness 2011 conference in Stockholm on the 14-16 of June 2011. Two scientific papers were submitted for publication in December 2011.
