Communications society’s carbon footprint mapped out
The communications industry does not just produce pixels and bytes. All in all, the IT and telecom sectors along with the media sector account for 3 percent of total global carbon emissions. This is the result of the first comprehensive academic study of communications society’s global climate impact.

Stockholm Futures Conference

CESC at Love2010
Jorge Zapico will present Carbon.to at “Love Stockholm 2010″. Carbon.to is an API for comparing CO2 emissions from different sources. It was developed by Jorge Zapico, PhD student at the Centre for Sustainable Communications, David Kjelkerud and Henrik Berggren.
Bytes or paper: Greening media with ICT?
The media and information & communication technology (ICT) sectors have developed rapidly in recent decades. There is an increasing overlap between the two sectors, with electronic media complementing and challenging traditional media alternatives. In her PhD thesis presented on 27 May 2010, Åsa Moberg examines how some new ways of producing, distributing and accessing media are performing from an environmental perspective.

Printing summit on green publishing
Åsa Moberg and Malin Picha, both PhD students at the Centre for Sustainable Communications, attended the WAN-IFRA/Iarigiai conference “Printing Summit 2010” on 15 April 2010 in Salzburg, Austria. For the first time in the history of WAN-IFRA, a large part of the conference focused on environmental aspects of the media business.
When’s the next bus? Real-time information on bus departures through optical tags
A new report by the Centre for Sustainable Communications documents a trial on an IT-based travel planning service. Skånetrafiken, a regional public transport provider, equipped timetable sheets at bus stops with so-called optical tags. Through these tags a test group of passengers could obtain real-time information on bus departures to their mobile phones. A research team from the Centre for Sustainable Communications took a close look at how this service was used, if it affected travel patterns and if it lead to increased use of public transport.
Stockholm Green Hackathon för goda miljöidéer
Utvecklare, forskare och studenter samlas i Reaktorhallen på KTH under helt ett dygn, den 21-22 oktober, för att delta i programmeringstävlingen Stockholm Green Hackathon. Bonnier pocket och Månpocket lanserar idag konceptet Klimatsmart pocket. CESC har på uppdrag av de båda förlagen beräknat pocketböckernas klimatpåverkan från hela produktionskedjan.
Vägen till resfria möten
Många företag har tydliga policys som syftar till att antalet affärsresor ska minska till förmån för ”resfria” videomöten. Ett forskarteam på KTH Centre for Sustainable Communications (CESC) har tittat närmare på faktorer som kan avgöra om resor ersätts med videomöten eller inte.
Vilka koldioxidutsläpp har din sajt?
Jorge Zapico har utvecklat en applikation för att beräkna klimatpåverkan av enskilda webbplatser. Applikationen heter Greenalytics och matchar dagsfärsk webbstatistik med miljödata. Det visar sig att KTH:s webbplats står för sju ton koldioxid varje år.
Kommunikationssamhällets klimatpåverkan kartlagd
Kommunikationsbranschen producerar inte bara pixlar och bytes. Sammanlagt står IT- och telekomsektorn tillsammans med mediesektorn för 3 procent av världens totala klimatpåverkande utsläpp. Det är resultatet av den första heltäckande akademiska studien av kommunikationssamhällets globala klimatpåverkan.

Mobilen visar vägen mot klimatsmart resande
Mobila applikationer har stor potential att effektivisera stadstrafiken och göra den mer miljövänlig. Centre for Sustainable Communications vid KTH står i startgroparna för att utveckla nästa generations reseplanerare tack vare de 9 miljoner kr som forskarna tilldelas av Vinnovas satsning på miljöinnovationer.
Ingen miljövinst med e-bok
Blir läsplattan årets julklapp? För miljömedvetna konsumenter finns det inga starka skäl att överge pappersboken. Man måste läsa minst 33 böcker under läsplattans livslängd för att den ska löna sig ur klimatsynpunkt.
Ny kommunikationsteknik sparar miljön – liksom tid och pengar
Fyra dagstidningar har under 2009 deltagit i ett forskningsprojekt med TU och KTH:s Centre for Sustainable Communications. Med ändrade vanor kring möten och resor mår miljön bättre och tidningarna sparar både tid och pengar, utan att för den skull försämra kommunikationen.
